FAQs
Q: Do you offer a sample edit?
A: Yes. I offer all new clients a free 1000 word sample edit; I like to be sure our styles will mesh before starting a project. Please contact me at [email protected] if you're interested or have any questions.
Q: After the copy edit, will my book be error-free?
A : No. I wish the answer were yes, but that's not realistic. Much as copy editors strive for perfection, a
small percentage of errors are likely to remain undetected. Errors are also sometimes introduced after
the copy edit, usually when something else is being corrected.
After you've gone through the copy edit and made any necessary changes, it's a good idea to read
through the book again and/or have someone with fresh eyes read it a final time to catch any stray
errors.
The more sets of eyes you have go over your work, the cleaner it will be, but perfection is unlikely. Even
some traditionally published books, which go through a series of editors and proofreaders, have errors
that are found after publication. It's unfortunate, but true.
Q: What genres do you accept?
A: I welcome all genre fiction (e.g., fantasy, romance, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, thriller, and mystery). I am not comfortable editing prolonged scenes of torture (although I'm fine with most zombie-apocalypse-type works). At this time I do not edit non-fiction or poetry.
Q: Do you edit short stories?
A: Yes. I like working on short stories and novellas.
Q: What form does my manuscript need to be in?
A: I use Microsoft Word's Track Changes and Comments to edit, which allows authors to easily accept or decline all suggested changes. Therefore, manuscripts need to be in a format compatible with Word.
Q: How long will it take?
A: Turnaround time depends on the level of service requested (copy editing takes longer than proofreading), my current workload, and the length of the manuscript. Please let me know your timeline, and I'll do my best to make it work. If I can't, I'll let you know upfront.
Q: I'm writing a techno-thriller/historical/sci-fi book. Do you fact check?
A: I don't fact check, but if you write that the moon is 150,000 miles from earth, and I happen to know it's really between 225,622 and 252,088 miles, depending on where it is in its orbit, I'll make a comment.
Q: How is payment handled?
A: All payments are made through PayPal and are in USD. A deposit of 50% is required before work commences.
